Creating A Regenerative Community Food System Toolkit

Explore the resources below to learn more about the value of creating a regenerative community food system and how you can be part of the movement in your home, business, or community.

Food Waste

  • 40% of all food produced is wasted; 20% during processing and transport, another 10% at retail outlets, and another 10% by individual consumers.
  • If “food waste” were a country it would be the third largest emitter of climate pollution in the world, just after China and the United States.

Tips for posting in the Waste No Food app

Tips for posting excess/edible food:

  • If you are posting a donation of excess food, please enter a brief description with the type of food and the amount of food  in the Food Description field.
Example: Food Description – 1 x 10 gallon bag of rolls or 4 lb of potatoes
  • If you request a morning or late afternoon pick-up for your donation, please consider posting your request early, with the date and time specified. This will help the recipients, non-profits and others, organize pick-up with ease. Please click below to ask a question about using WNF.
  • If your donation is not claimed and/or collected within 24 hours of posting, please re-post the donation.
  • When donating excess food, please make sure to enter a time range for pick up that is mindful of your closing hours, in the WNF app. Also enter THE QUANTITY of food as apx pounds, apx # of meals, and apx people that could be served. That way charities will know if it is within their capacity and worth their time to travel to collect it. Include any other pertinent information in the Special Instructions section at the bottom – such as a contact name, which door to use, and whether or not the food is currently refrigerated.

Tips for posting food scraps:

  • Please post 1-3 buckets at a time. Most donors are posting once or twice a week – this is a good schedule to follow as this amount and frequency of pick ups is manageable for our current recipients.  Most recipients have two or three buckets, so if you post 4 or more buckets, you may end up with fewer clean buckets in return.
  • If you are posting a donation of food scraps, please enter the number of full buckets in the Food Description field. Example: Food Description – 3 x buckets food scraps.
  • If you are posting a donation of food for animal feed, please enter a brief description with the food and the amount of food in the Food Description field.  Example: Food Description – 100 pumpkins for animals/compost.
  • Please remember to not over fill or pack the buckets. This causes the rims on the lids to break and it makes storing and transporting much more difficult.
